Spanning the course of human history beginning with the Sioux and ending in the 20th century, the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society presents a comprehensive look into the region's past through ancient artifacts, antiques, documents and photographs. It focuses on the people and events that helped shape the state as it is found today, including the native inhabitants, 18th and 19th century settlers, missionaries and government officials that molded the framework of the state and the entire nation. The museum sits on the capitol complex in Pierre in the earth-covered Cultural Heritage Center, north of the State Library.
